Millions of folk all had a flutter each week dreaming of scooping their fortune. And some life-changing amounts of money were won from the very beginning. Mr Dodd, 21, was working for 48 shillings a week as a pottery labourer in Stoke-on-Trent to help the family buy a home of their own. I would rather have died working than starve. And she certainly did - it took the couple just three years to blow their winnings after they splashed out on cars, furs, champagne parties and a ranch-style home.
But when Keith died in a car crash just four years after their win, a huge tax bill left Viv bankrupt. The first win of more than a million went to a group of nurses from Wiltshire in And in September , Graham Barlow from Leicester was just about to give up on his hopes on getting rich quick as his weekly stake was proving a strain on the family finances.
With pregnant wife Diane due to give birth shortly, Graham planned to tell his father, Arthur that he was throwing the towel in on their Pools entry. It is a dream come true. To say this is a life-changing experience, would be the understatement of the year. But not every Pools story had a happy ending. Joe Bosher from Tyneside thought he had won the jackpot in when his selections came in. It turned out that Joe had given his coupon to year-old son Joseph to put on for him, but Joseph had binned the coupon and spent the stake on sweets for him and his mates instead.
And now The Pools have launched a new game, Footie5, to bring that excitement to a new generation of football fans.
It also made a billionaire of the man who brought The Pools to the masses, Liverpool businessman John Moores. The original idea was thought up by John Jervis Barnard from Birmingham, who realised that most of his friends liked both football and placing bets.
But he was ready to give up on the idea when he met John Moores who saw potential in it and took the idea back to his home town Manchester. He and his pals Colin Askham and Bill Hughes were constantly looking for money-making ideas to get them out of the Post Office. The project continued to lose money and Hughes and Askham were ready to throw in the towel. But not John Moores. The Pools have launched a new game, Footie5 , to bring excitement to a new generation of football fans. Not only can fans get their football fix on the big screen but they can now also potentially win a major prize for their sporting passion.
Footie5 is now live.
